TEMPE, Ariz. – Second-ranked Arizona struck the Cal Poly softball team for seven runs during the first inning and another seven during the third as the Mustangs completed play at the Arizona State-hosted Kajikawa Classic with a 14-0, five-inning loss against the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats (5-1) notched the only runs they needed off of Mustang starting righthander Rebecca Patton (1-2) via third baseman Brigette Del Ponte's two-run homer with one out during the bottom of the first inning. Five batters later, Patton issued a bases-loaded walk to shortstop Alex Lavine as Arizona added five additional runs with two outs.
Mustang freshman shortstop Kim Westlund opened the game by singling up the middle. Westlund advanced to second base on freshman second baseman Ashley Romano's first collegiate sacrifice, but Cal Poly enjoyed just one additional baserunner the remainder of the day after senior catcher Stephanie Correia (above) singled with one down in the second.
Cal Poly (1-4) continues action at the Feb. 18-20 UNLV-hosted Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. The Mustangs open play on Friday versus No. 16 BYU at 11:15 a.m. and No. 4 Tennessee at 3:45 p.m.
