Burns, Martin lead Women's Hoop to 71-55 win over San Jose State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Seniors Ashlee Burns and Christine Martin combined for 32 points in leading the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a 71-55 non-conference win over San Jose State on Sunday at Mott Gym.
With the win Cal Poly improves to 3-2 on the young season while SJSU falls to 0-6. The Mustangs will return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 30 when the team will host Pepperdine in Mott Gym for a 4:30 game.
Burns scored 17 points when she hit six of 12 shots from the field and five of nine from long range. Martin scored 15 points in her first start of the season when she connected on six of nine from the floor.
Redshirt freshman Ariana Elegado, in her first start as a Mustang, dished out eight assists and added seven points.
Sophomore Molly Schlemer came off the bench to score eight points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds with 12 coming on the defensive end.
Brittany Johnson led the Spartans with 20 points with Sara Plavljanin adding 16.
Cal Poly shot 39 percent from the floor and med 35 percent from beyond the arch. San Jose State shot 30 percent from the floor and 33 percent long range.
Cal Poly held a 54-38 advantage on the boards and dished out a season-high 21 assists.
In the first half the Mustangs moved out to a 17-12 lead when Martin, making her first start of the season, converted a traditional three-point play with 11:09 on the clock.
The Spartans responded with an 8-2 run to take 20-19 lead at 7:33 when Johnson hit a jumper.
SJSU kept the pressure up and extended its lead to five (28-23) at 5:09 when Ta'Rae Cunnigan converted a layup.
Cal Poly stormed back with the help of six points from Schlemer and a 12-5 run to close the period and hold a 35-33 lead at the break.
In the second half, SJSU tied the game (35-35) with 18:51 on the clock, but at that stage the Mustangs went on a 15-4 run over the next eight minutes and never looked back.
Cal Poly held its largest lead of the game at the 4:22 mark when Martin hit a three from the right baseline for a 71-48 lead.
Burns led the charge with 12 second half points, hitting four of five from long range with martin adding eight with two 3-pointers.
Schlemer was a dominate factor on the boards with 11 rebounds in the final period.
