
Mustangs Fall to Santa Clara in Overtime, 73-65

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball team hit a regulation game tying shot with 19.3 seconds left on the clock, but it would not be enough as the Santa Clara Broncos outscored the Mustangs 10-2 in the extra period to win 73-65. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 4-7 while Santa Clara improves to 3-10.
Junior guard Ashlee Burns came off the bench to lead the Mustangs with 20 points while senior Rachel Clancy added 14. Burns was two points shy of her career-high as she hit seven of 13 from the floor and two of five from beyond the arc.
Santa Clara was led by Meagan Fulps with 22 points with Alyssa Shoji off the bench adding 19.
Cal Poly outrebounded SCU 45-34 and was led by junior Abby Bloetscher's 10 with sophomore Kayla Griffin recording a career-high nine boards.
The Broncos outshot the Mustangs 45 to 38 percent and hit nine of 20 from long range. Cal Poly struggled behind the three point line hitting just four of 16.
Each team turned the ball over 16 times.
After falling behind 7-2 in the first three minutes of the game, Cal Poly turned things around and went on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes and a 16-7 lead capped by Bloetscher's jumper at 11:25.
SCU battled back to take a 26-25 lead with 3:23 left in the half when Ricki Radanovich hit a three from the right side.
The Mustangs carried a 36-31 lead into the break when Burns hit a three in the closing moments.
The Mustangs held a lead until the 16:40 mark of the second period when Radanovich hit a three to put the Broncos up one, 39-38.
SCU stretched its lead to seven (63-56) with 4:14 left on the clock. Cal Poly would score the next seven points to tie the game capped by Desiray Johnston layup with 19 seconds remaining tying the game and sending into over time at 63-63.
In overtime SCU scored the first four points before Griffin hit a jumper to cut the lead to two (67-65). But it would be the only points the Mustangs would score as SCU would score the next six points and the 73-65 win.
The Mustangs will open Big West Conference play on Sunday, Jan. 2, when the team travels to Long Beach State for a 2 pm game.
