One of the most noteworthy performers in the history of softball, 1996 Olympic gold medalist and four-time All-America selection Michele Granger is in her third season as the Cal Poly softball program’s pitching coach.
“Michele is one of the best to have ever played and brings her passion and knowledge of the game to our pitching staff and entire team,” head coach Jenny Condon said. “Her mental approach and discipline are second-to-none. I can’t wait to see how our pitchers continue to develop under her.”
Granger, a four-time All-America honoree at California (1989-93) and a member of the United States National Team that captured the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, arrives at Cal Poly after serving as the head coach for Granite Bay (Calif.) HS (2010-19). Twenty-six years after pitching her last collegiate game, Granger still ranks first in NCAA Division I history with 25 career no-hitters, second all-time in shutouts (94), third in complete games (155), sixth for innings pitched (1,202.2), eighth in perfect games (five), ninth in strikeouts (1,640), 14th in starts (162), 18th in ERA (0.46) and 25th in victories (119).
Granger, who pitched the opening game of the 1996 Olympics for the United States and the gold medal-clinching victory against China, has also coached collegiately at two-year Sierra College (2008-10) and Tennessee (2001-03). At the travel ball level, she has most recently coached the So Cal Choppers 18u squad (2018-19) and is the founder and president of the Silverstreak Softball youth organization.
Granger is a member of the respective halls of fame for the International Softball Federation, Amateur Softball Association and California Athletics Department.
