LA JOLLA – Junior forward Colin Pearce’s sixth-minute free-kick strike handed the Cal Poly men’s soccer program an early lead at UC San Diego, but the Tritons equalized in the 89th as Wednesday’s Pac-12 Conference debut for both sides finished in a 1-1 draw.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mathew Guerra chalked up four saves for Cal Poly (4-2-4, 0-0-1), which produced the decisive goal with their second shot attempt of the night.
Streaking toward goal, senior forward Jack Civitts was cut down at the top of the UC San Diego penalty area by Tritons defender Matteo Saffer. Pearce (above) took the ensuing awarded free kick, striking his team-leading fourth goal of the season past UC San Diego goalkeeper Nic Thiele and into the upper left corner of the Tritons net.
Guerra, meanwhile, chalked up saves in the seventh, eighth and 31st minutes to preserve Cal Poly’s lead heading into the break before sophomore defender Tanner Casey blocked a goal-bound attempt in the 78th.
UC San Diego, however, found the equalizer 85 seconds from full time through Saffer, who received a pass chested down in the box from Keenai Braun before firing through defensive traffic and past Guerra for the 1-1 draw.
