LA QUINTA – Four Mustangs sit inside the top 20 spots on the Big West Championship leaderboard following Monday’s second round, but the Cal Poly men’s golf program – despite retaining second place after recording its third lowest team round of the season – is 28 shots behind overall leader Long Beach State.
At the 7,056-yard, par-72 La Quinta Country Club, Cal Poly carded a collective four-under 284 Monday, but three-time defending champion Long Beach State –with four of the top six players on the leaderboard – went 18-under during the second round and takes its 28-stroke lead over both the Mustangs and Hawai’i into Tuesday’s final round.
Individually for Cal Poly, junior Jack Jarvis is ninth after posting a two-under 70 Monday that included two birdies and an eagle on the par-five, 543-yard 11th hole. With a two-under 142, Jarvis is nine strokes behind overall Steen Zeman of Long Beach State.
Graduate student Kyle Dougherty (above) and freshman Rafael Bobo-Lloret share 12th place at even-par 144. Dougherty fired a one-under 71 Monday with six birdies. Bobo-Lloret, meanwhile, was even par during the second round with four birdies.
