SAN LUIS OBISPO – Three Mustangs finished inside the top 15 places on the final Big West Championship leaderboard Tuesday afternoon as the Cal Poly men’s golf program recorded a second-place showing – it’s highest placement in a decade and best under sixth-year head coach Phil Rowe.
At the 7,056-yard, par-72 La Quinta Country Club, freshmen Rafael Bobo-Lloret (above) and Zihao Wang were Cal Poly’s top individual finishers, sharing 10th place with three-round, two-under 214s. As a team, Cal Poly’s one-under 863 team score helped the Mustangs to their highest Big West Championship position since finishing second in 2016. The 863 was also Cal Poly’s third lowest team score this season.
With the top five individual finishers, 28th-ranked Long Beach State captured its fourth successive Big West Championship title with a 48-under 816, smashing the previous record of 22-under.
Bobo-Lloret, February’s Big West Golfer of the Month honoree, closed his two-under 214 (72-72-70) with a two-under 70 Tuesday that included four birdies.
Wang (74-71-69), meanwhile, produced six birdies Tuesday as a part of a three-under 69 to climb 10 spots on the leaderboard and secure his first top-10 collegiate finish.
Cal Poly junior Jack Jarvis was 15th with an even-par 216 (72-70-74). Graduate student Kyle Dougherty recorded four birdies Tuesday, but finished in 23rd with a four-over 220 (73-71-75). Sophomore Nolan Kuszyk, meanwhile, was 29th with a six-over 222 (73-73-76).
