SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men’s golf program looks to end a 20-year title drought at the Big West Championship as the Mustangs open the three-round, May 3-5 competition Sunday morning.
The 54-hole championship at the 7,056-yard, par-72 La Quinta Country Club opens with an initial 18 holes on Sunday, May 3. Action continues on Monday, May 4 with a further 18 holes before the final round on Tuesday, May 5.
In recent years, Cal Poly finished third at the 2023 and 2024 Big West Championships with Baron Szeto sharing the 2023 individual title. However, Cal Poly’s 2006 team triumph remains its only title at the Big West Championship.
No. 28 Long Beach State enters this year’s Big West Championship as the three-time defending titlist and winners of four of the last five competitions.
Sophomore Nolan Kuszyk (72.4 strokes per round) enters the Big West Championship as Cal Poly’s low scorer this season, edging freshman Rafael Bobo-Lloret (72.6).
Kuszyk (above), the only Mustang to compete in all 30 rounds this year, also leads Cal Poly with three top-10 showings, five top-20 finishes and 11 rounds under par with four in the 60s.
Bobo-Lloret, with eight rounds under par and three in the 60s, was named Big West Golfer of the Month for February after sharing the individual title at CSUN’s Feb. 2-3 Bill Cullum Invitational.
Graduate student Kyle Dougherty (74.1), freshman Zihao Wang (74.5) and junior Jack Jarvis (74.6) round off Cal Poly’s lineup.
