SAN LUIS OBISPO – Following a five-year stint in which he helped drive Grand Canyon to three successive NCAA Regional appearances (2023-25), Michael Schaloum was recently named Cal Poly Duan Family Men’s Associate Head Coach.
“It’s a great time to be a Mustang and we’re delighted to announce Michael’s addition,” seventh-year Cal Poly head coach Phil Rowe said. “(Michael) is a true student of the game and brings great ambition, understanding of technique and a competitive mindset, as well as connections with high-class recruits from around the nation and world.
“He’s known as one of the most passionate and driven young coaches. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can inject into our program’s momentum and we’d like to thank the Duan family whose endowment makes this hire possible.”
Elevated as Grand Canyon’s associate head coach prior to the 2024-25 season, Schaloum coached eight all-conference selections in his five years with the Lopes – including 2025 WAC Freshman of the Year Matthew Diehl. The season prior, Nicky Kling earned WAC Golfer of the Year honors.
With Grand Canyon climbing to a program record ranking of No. 42 in the Clippd NCAA Division I rankings during the 2024-25 season, the Lopes closed the year 11th at the NCAA Regionals. Schaloum helped direct Grand Canyon to a second successive WAC Championship title in 2024 – one of three teams titles and two individual titles earned by the Lopes that year.
With Schaloum, Grand Canyon finished 11th at the 2023 NCAA Regionals. The 2022-23 Lopes also tied a 54-hole WAC Championship record for lowest team score at 34-under par. During Schaloum’s first year on staff, Grand Canyon finished third at the 2022 WAC Championship.
During Schaloum’s final year at Grand Canyon last season, the Lopes captured the National Golf Invitational postseason championship.
Coach Rowe is one of the most respected people in college golf and has built a tremendous foundation at Cal Poly. Between the first-class education, outstanding facilities (at Mustang Golf Academy) and an amazing location in San Luis Obispo, there are few better places in the country to develop as both a golfer and person. I feel incredibly fortunate to be joining a program that is already positioned to make significant strides this season.”- Michael Schaloum, Cal Poly Duan Family Men’s Golf Associate Head Coach
A co-captain during his playing days at Grand Canyon (2016-18), Schaloum graduated with a degree in finance and economics. Prior to transferring to Grand Canyon, Schaloum competed at College of the Desert (Palm Desert, Calif.), winning four tournament titles.
Schaloum graduated from O’Dea HS in Seattle as a four-year letterwinner in golf and tennis.
Following his graduation from Grand Canyon, Schaloum worked as an equities analyst for wealth management firm Evergreen Gavekal. He then moved back to Phoenix to begin his coaching career, working with beginning players up to mini tour professionals. Schaloum has caddied for future PGA Tour winners Cameron Davis and Min Woo Lee as amateurs. He also caddied during the 2016 KPMG LPGA Championship.
Off the course, Schaloum spends time volunteering, serving on the board of Seattle’s Fir State Golf Club – one of the oldest historically black golf clubs in the country – as an investment coordinator and tournament chairman.
