SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly men’s tennis put on a show in front of a packed and loud Ronca Tennis Center under the lights Friday night, taking down Nevada 6-1 for its third consecutive win.
The match started in dramatic fashion in doubles. Cal Poly’s No. 3 duo of Leo Matthysen and Luc Hoeijmans won their match 6-4 to begin it. A short while later, the No. 2 pair of Sean Kamyshev and Jack Cross then won their match on one of the craziest shots in Mustang tennis history. Up 6-2 in the tiebreaker, Cross put his racket above his face at the net and returned back-to-back hot shots back at him, the second one dropping to win Cal Poly the doubles point.
The Mustangs (3-1) took that momentum to singles, winning five of the six singles matches. At the No. 6 spot, Aaron Eliscu made quick work of his opponent winning 6-1, 6-1. Kamyshev followed suit a short time later with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 spot to put Cal Poly up 3-0.
The dual was clinched by Hoeijmans at the No. 3 spot after he came out with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Nearly at the same time, Cross then won his match at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Jovan Lubbe then gave the Mustangs their sixth point of the match after he won his third set super tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot to win it 5-7, 6-0, 1-0(8).
The Mustangs are back in action at Ronca Tennis Center Sunday at 10 a.m. when they host LMU.
