NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis team earned its second victory in as many days on Sunday, rolling to a 6-1 victory at Big West foe CSUN to complete an undefeated weekend in Southern California.
The win allowed Cal Poly to improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in Big West play. On Saturday in Los Angeles, the Mustangs secured a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over No. 50 Loyola Marymount.
The Mustangs opened the dual by capturing the doubles point. Redshirt junior Amy Leather and true freshman Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako teamed up for a dominant 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot to get things started. For Jakupovic-Kljako, it was her first dual appearance as a Mustang. Cal Poly then fell at No. 1, but juniors Candela Aparisi and Natalie Lynch stepped up and secured a 6-4 win at No. 2 to clinch the dual point. The pairing improved to a team-best 4-2 on the season.
In singles play, the Matadors (4-2, 0-1 Big West) won at No. 5 to level the dual at 1-1, but then the Mustangs won five straight matches to stampede to victory.
Sophomore Jessica MacCallum won in straight sets at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3), Aparisi earned a win in straight sets at No. 3 (7-5, 6-2) and senior Kennedy Buntrock clinched the dual win with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph at No. 1. Buntrock improved to 6-1 on the season with the win.
Cal Poly capped off a successful weekend in SoCal by earning a pair of three-set comeback victories at No. 4 and No. 6. After losing the first set in her match at No. 4 7-5, senior Alexandr Ozerets rallied, winning the second 6-2 and the third 6-3 to pick up her third straight victory and improve to 5-2 on the season. Then senior Sarah MacCallum grabbed her second singles win of the season at No. 6, earning a hard-fought 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Riding a three-match winning streak, Cal Poly travels to the Bay Area next weekend to face Santa Clara on Friday, Feb. 27, and San Jose State on Saturday, Feb. 28, to continue a six-match road swing.
