SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis program wrapped up play at the ITA Southwest Regionals on Sunday, highlighted by senior Natalie Lynch and junior Jessica MacCallum advancing to the Round of 16 in the doubles main draw in the one of the nation’s toughest regional tournaments.
Lynch and MacCallum — who captured the doubles title at the Big West Fall Selection event two weeks ago to qualify for the ITA Conference Masters Championships — opened the tourney by earning an 8-3 victory over a pairing from San Diego State before booking their ticket to the Round of 16 with an 8-6 win over University of San Diego’s Charlotte Keitel and Lila Grace Bachour.
In the Round of 16, the duo squared off with UCLA’s Jessica Bernales and Olivia Center — the fourth seeded doubles team in the tournament — and fell 8-4.
MacCallum also had a strong showing in the singles main draw, nearly pulling off a major upset. After dismantling SDSU’s Teja Tirunelveli 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 64, MacCallum took on Pepperdine’s Ziva Falkner, the third-seeded player in the tournament and the 20th-ranked player in the country. MacCallum prevailed in a thrilling first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), before dropping the second 6-3. In the decisive third set, the Laguna Beach native came up just short, 7-5, to see her run come to an end in the Round of 32.
A total of seven Mustangs competed in the tournament with Lynch and senior Candela Aparisi both picking up a pair of singles victories, and fifth-year Amy Leather, sophomores Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako and Aspen Chung, and freshman Kaia Celin Bostroem Joergensen all earning one. Aparisi and Chung teamed up for a doubles victory at the event as well.
Cal Poly continues its fall season at the Dennis Rizza Classic in Palos Verdes, Calif. on Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
