MacCallum, Lynch Capture Doubles Title at Big West Fall Selection

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Senior Natalie Lynch and junior Jessica MacCallum captured the doubles title at the Big West Fall Selection event hosted by UC San Diego this Thursday through Sunday at the Northview Tennis Courts and Muir Tennis Courts.
While battling competition from the rest of the conference, the tandem went 5-0 in doubles play across the four-day tournament to highlight action for the Cal Poly women’s tennis team. The event featured a 64-player single elimination singles main draw, and a 32-team main draw bracket for doubles.
With the victory, MacCallum and Lynch qualified for the ITA Conference Masters Championships in Rome, Georgia, on Nov. 5-8 as the Big West’s representatives in doubles. Two doubles teams from the ITA Masters Championships, the champion and runner-up, will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championships on Nov. 17-22 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
MacCallum and Lynch had an impressive showing at the Big West Fall Selection, capped by an unbeaten final day of play Sunday. The duo took down Katarina Vayser and My-Anh Holmes from UC Santa Barbara 8-2 in the semifinals before rolling to a 6-4, 6-2 win in the championship match over Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo Hernandez from Long Beach State. Last year, Lynch also reached the doubles title match in the first year of the tournament while playing alongside former Mustang Kennedy Buntrock, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) to a pairing from UCSB in the championship.
MacCallum and Lynch were also responsible for the team’s two deepest runs in the singles main draw during the tournament. MacCallum made it all the way to the semifinals, earning three straight-set victories before coming up short to UCSB’s Ekua Youri, who went onto win the singles title. Lynch advanced to the Round of 16 in singles with three consecutive victories before falling to CSUF’s Emilie Lugon.
MacCallum and Lynch both went 5-0 in doubles and 3-1 in singles during the tournament.
Fifth-year Amy Leather earned a singles victory in the main draw, and sophomores Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako and Aspen Chung both recorded wins in the consolation bracket in singles.
Cal Poly competes in the ITA Southwest Regionals on Oct. 15-20 in San Diego.
