SPOKANE, Wash. — In a wild, back-and-forth match that saw all six singles matches go to three sets, the Cal Poly men’s tennis team came up one point short of victory Monday on the road against Gonzaga, falling 4-3 to snap the Mustangs’ five match win streak.
Gonzaga started the match by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots.
In singles, the Bulldogs won three set matches at the No. 2 and No. 1 spots to take a 3-0 lead. Cal Poly then came back to tie it 3-3 following three set victories by Jack Cross, Luc Hoeijmans, and Aaron Eliscu.
Cross, Hoeijmans, and Eliscu are each now all 6-1 on the season in singles.
The match then came down to Sean Kamyshev at the No. 5 spot. After splitting two very close sets, Kamyshev found himself in a third set tiebreaker tied at 6-6. Gonzaga’s Tom Dunlop proceeded to take the tiebreaker in close fashion 8-6 to clinch the win for the Bulldogs.
The Mustangs will now be idle until Feb. 28 when they travel over to Chicago to take on Depaul at 9 a.m. PT and Dartmouth at 4 p.m. PT.
