CHICAGO — Cal Poly (6-3) wrapped up day one at the George Lott Classic with a 4-2 victory over Ivy League foe Dartmouth after dropping a 4-1 morning result to tournament host DePaul.
The day and tournament kicked off with an early morning bout against the Blue Demons at their home indoor complex, XS Tennis Village.
The pairs of Hoeijmans/Lubbe and Haviv/Matthysen picked up matching 6-4 victories to quickly snatch the doubles point, but DePaul responded in kind with a quartet of straight-set wins to seal the 4-1 result.
Cal Poly’s afternoon effort more than made up for the morning’s start, as the Mustangs handed Dartmouth just its second loss of the season on the back of a second doubles point of the day and singles victories from upperclassmen Luc Hoeijmans, Raz Haviv, and Sean Kamyshev.
The team bounced back really well after a disappointing match in the morning. Getting a win over a solid Ivy squad is a great achievement, and our team’s response to the first match is encouraging.Assistant Coach Jurgen De Jager
Jack Cross and Sean Kamyshev made a statement in the No. 1 doubles slot, taking down the Big Green (6-1) to remain unbeaten as a pair at a perfect 4-0.
Dartmouth evened doubles with a 6-4 win over Haviv/Matthysen, but Hoeijmans/Lubbe earned their second doubles victory of the day (7-5) to seal a tightly contested point.
Once again, Dartmouth and Cal Poly traded wins, as Raz Haviv (6-4, 6-1) and Kamyshev (7-6, 6-4), improving to 4-5 and 7-2 records, respectively, knotted singles at two apiece to set up a dramatic finish between the ones.
Luc Hoeijmans, heading the singles lineup for just the second time this season, picked up his third overall victory of the day, outlasting Dartmouth’s Henry Ren (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) in three sets to earn a crucial 4-2 team win.
Cal Poly wraps up its stay in Chicago on Sunday, facing off against Army at 7 a.m. PT, before returning for a pair of matches in San Luis Obispo next weekend.
