SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly delivered another display of sheer dominance at Mott Athletics Center, sweeping Cal State Bakersfield (25-13, 25-16, 25-14) to solidify their strong 11-3 overall record and a perfect 2-0 start in Big West conference play.
The Mustangs controlled the match from the opening serve, showcasing the balanced and efficient offensive attack that has become their trademark. The team recorded a .364 hitting percentage, marking the eighth time this season they have hit at least .300, and needed just 88 total attacks to tally 42 kills.
Cal Poly's service game was also a key weapon. The Mustangs landed a season-high nine aces, six of which came from London Haberfield, consistently keeping the Roadrunners off balance. The team also posted an impressive 73.3% sideout rate.
Capitalizing on aggressive serves from Haberfield that resulted in multiple aces, Cal Poly raced to an early lead in the first set and never looked back. A strong blocking presence at the net from Emme Bullis and Chloe Leluge also contributed as the Mustangs closed out the set 25-13, holding Bakersfield to a meager .148 hitting percentage. The 12-point margin was Cal Poly’s largest set victory of the season.
The Roadrunners put up more resistance in the second set, briefly narrowing the gap, but the Mustangs' firepower was too much to contain. Key contributions from Emma Fredrick and Annabelle Thalken, who notched multiple kills, helped maintain the offensive pressure. Cal Poly's ability to side-out quickly stifled any potential momentum for the Roadrunners, and they secured the set 25-16.
Determined to finish the match in straight sets, Cal Poly weathered a brief surge from Bakersfield at the start of the third. After falling behind 5-1, the Mustangs erupted on a 9-0 run, fueled again by Haberfield’s stellar serving. The Roadrunners had no answer for Cal Poly's relentless attack, which saw contributions from across the roster, including substitutes Samantha Callahan and Aveya Stone. The Mustangs cruised to a 25-14 victory in the final frame.
Individually, the match showcased Cal Poly's depth. Kendall Beshear led the team with 11 kills, while Chloe Leluge was remarkably efficient, posting eight kills with a .667 hitting percentage alongside middle blocking partner Charlotte Kelly who also hit .583 for seven kills.
Setter Emme Bullis distributed 26 assists and led the team defensively with 10 digs and 3 block assists, recording her sixth double-double of the season. Elif Hurriyet and Callahan combined to contribute nine assists in support of Bullis. Hurriyet also tied Bullis with a team-leading 10 digs.
Haberfield’s serving was a decisive factor. Her six aces not only set a career-high and a team season-high but also brought her within two of the single-match program record.
The sweep and subsequent win streak provides strong momentum as Cal Poly heads back on the road after a three-week homestand, traveling to face UC San Diego and Long Beach State next weekend.
