LA JOLLA, Calif. — Cal Poly saw its momentum halted Friday night, falling in a straight-set road loss to UC San Diego (23-25, 24-26, 15-25) at LionTree Arena.
The Mustangs, who entered the match on a eight match win streak having taken their last 15 sets, were unable to close out tight sets early and fell victim to a dominant Tritons performance in the third. Cal Poly suffered their first loss in almost a month (Sept. 6, 1-3 vs. Oklahoma) and move to an 11-4 overall record (2-1 Big West).
The first two sets were nail-biters, featuring 19 combined ties. The Mustangs even outhit the Tritons in both sets and built late leads but could not withstand UCSD's closing pushes, dropping the opening frame 25-23 and then suffering a heartbreaking 26-24 defeat in the second crucial errors sealed their fate.
After the intermission, any hope of a comeback was extinguished as the Tritons (4-11, 2-1 Big West) raced out to a large lead in the third set, capitalizing on Mustang errors and unleashing a .429 hitting percentage to win 25-15 and seal the match.
Kendall Beshear led the Mustangs' offense with 11 kills, while Emma Fredrick added nine. Beshear and Fredrick shared the team-lead for digs with nine apiece. Emme Bullis facilitated the attack with 22 assists. However, the team's offense never fully found its rhythm, finishing with a .204 hitting percentage and committing 12 service errors.
The loss serves as a rocky start to the southern road trip for Cal Poly, which will look to rebound and get back into the win column with tomorrow's outing at Long Beach State (6 p.m.).
