LONG BEACH, Calif. — At the Walter Pyramid, the future site of this season's Big West Women's Volleyball Championship, the Cal Poly Mustangs (11-5, 2-2 BWC) fell 1-3 to Long Beach State (11-4, 4-0 BWC).
The Mustangs struggled offensively, committing a season-high 26 attacking errors and hitting just .168. After dropping the first two sets, they mounted a thrilling comeback to win the third set in extra points and fought hard in a marathon fourth set that featured 13 ties but ultimately fell short.
Despite the loss, Cal Poly saw standout performances from Chloe Leluge (13 kills, .462 attack percentage) and Kendall Beshear (16 kills, 2 service aces, 5 blocks). However, the Mustangs couldn't match Long Beach State's consistent firepower in the final stretches.
Emme Bullis tallied 26 assists, while Samantha Callahan contributed 16. On defense, Elif Hurriyet and Emma Fredrick co-led with 17 digs apiece, and Leluge and Charlotte Kelly each added six block assists.
The match also featured notable debuts. Kayla Murdoch, after transferring from Ventura College and taking a medical redshirt in 2024, made her Division I debut and recorded three block assists in limited playing time. True freshman Maren O'Farrell also debuted, playing as the Libero in the fourth set and notching a pair of digs.
A seven-point run by Long Beach State (from 8-6 to 8-13) set the tone for the first set. Cal Poly closed the gap several times, but error-prone attacks allowed the Beach to pull away, 25-20.
Cal Poly took an early lead in the second set, but Long Beach State quickly found its rhythm, building a lead of up to seven points. The Mustangs, hitting in the negative, never recovered, and the Beach won 25-18.
Down two sets, the Mustangs fought back in a dramatic third frame. They withstood a late surge from Long Beach State and, tied 24-24, clinched the set with back-to-back kills from Beshear.
The fourth set was a tense battle featuring 13 ties. Cal Poly fended off a match point at 24-23 and had chances to force a fifth set, but a final service error and a kill from Long Beach State's Elise Agi sealed the 27-25 victory.
The Mustangs will look to regroup for the Blue-Green Rivalry matchup against UC Santa Barbara at Mott Athletics Center on Tuesday before traveling to face Hawai'i on Friday.
