SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After a challenging road trip, the Cal Poly Mustangs (11-5, 2-2 BWC) are fighting to get back on track following their first consecutive losses in over a calendar year (September 2024).
The weekend setback began in La Jolla, where UC San Diego snapped the Mustangs' impressive eight-match winning streak in straight sets. The first two frames were nail-biters, each decided by just two points, but Cal Poly couldn't hold onto late leads, falling in both before UCSD dominated the third to seal the match.
The struggle continued Saturday against Long Beach State, where the Mustangs fell 1-3. Despite a resilient comeback to win the third set and a fierce battle in the fourth, the offense sputtered, committing a season-high 26 errors in the loss. The match provided a silver lining, however, as it featured the Division I debuts of transfer Kayla Murdoch and true freshman Maren O'Farrell.
Amid the team's difficulties, sophomore outside hitter Kendall Beshear shone brightly. She powered the offense with a team-leading 27 kills (3.86 per set) and added 16 digs. Her formidable jump serve produced two more aces, solidifying her hold on second place in the conference for total service aces.
True freshman Charlotte Kelly continued to establish herself as a defensive force at the net. She piled up 10 block assists (1.43 per set) over the weekend, including a career-high six against Long Beach State. Despite a rotational role, she also chipped in seven kills.
The Mustangs now return to Mott Athletics Center for a pivotal week. First, they reignite the Blue-Green Rivalry on Tuesday at 6 p.m., hosting UC Santa Barbara for the 93rd time. Although trailing in the all-time series (37-55), Cal Poly swept the Gauchos twice in straight sets last season to claim bragging rights and holds a 11-7 advantage over the last decade. Fans are encouraged to create a sea of green for this GREEN OUT and help fuel the Mustangs!
Then, Cal Poly embarks on its longest road trip of the year, traveling across the Pacific for a 2024 Big West Championship rematch with Hawai'i. While the Mustangs are winless in their last four against the Rainbow Wahine, they are poised to capitalize on Hawai'i's uncharacteristically tough start to the season.
