SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly opened Big West Conference play impressively Friday night, sweeping CSUN (25-20, 25-21, 25-20) to improve to 10-3 overall and jump atop the conference standings.
The Mustangs have now won seven consecutive home matches in 2025 and eleven straight dating back to last season. Friday's victory was also Cal Poly's fifth consecutive straight-sets win over CSUN since 2022.
The first frame set a gritty tone. After a back-and-forth start with several ties, the Mustangs used a crucial 7-0 run on Emme Bullis's serve to build a commanding 17-8 lead. Cal Poly never relinquished control, closing out the set 25-20 despite a late push from the Matadors.
The second set was the most competitive, featuring 13 ties and five lead changes. CSUN fought back from an early deficit and held a late 18-17 advantage, threatening to even the match. However, the Mustangs displayed clutch composure, rallying to win 25-21 and take the 2-0 lead.
Riding that momentum, Cal Poly built an early 10-6 lead in the third set. CSUN rallied once more, closing within one point at 21-20, but the Mustangs shut the door with a four-point run to win 25-20. The offense fired on all cylinders in the final frame, hitting a match-best .324, capped by a final kill from Kendall Beshear, who finished with an efficient 12 kills and a .462 hitting percentage.
