SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly Mustangs (9-3) will storm into Big West Conference play with momentum to spare, sweeping California Baptist (25-15, 25-21, 25-17) on Saturday night to finish an unbeaten tournament run and extend their winning streak to six matches.
The Mustangs seized control early after a brief 4-4 tie in the first set, methodically pulling away with relentless pressure. While their own offense was finding its rhythm, they capitalized masterfully on a struggling CBU squad that committed 10 attacking errors. The Mustangs' defense was immediately imposing, holding the Lancers to a staggering -.036 hitting percentage to cruise to a 25-15 win.
CBU responded with fiercer resistance in the second frame, but Cal Poly's resilience shone through. Even with an uncharacteristic 8 errors, the Mustang attack delivered 11 kills. More importantly, their defensive wall remained firm, once again stifling the Lancer offense to clinch a hard-fought 25-21 set victory.
The third set featured CBU's most efficient offensive effort (.132), but it was no match for a locked-in Cal Poly squad. The Mustangs put on a defensive clinic, racking up 15 digs and 7 blocks to extinguish any hope of a comeback and seal the match decisively, 25-17.
For the third consecutive night, Emma Fredrick led all attackers, pounding a team-high 11 kills. Annabelle Thalken delivered a model of efficiency, hammering 8 kills against just 2 errors on 14 swings for an outstanding .429 hitting percentage.
Setter Emme Bullis orchestrated the offense with 21 assists while adding 5 digs and a block assist. Libero Elif Hurriyet anchored the back row with a match-high 12 digs. At the net, Chloe Leluge was a formidable presence, registering a match-best five block assists.
The bench provided a critical spark, with true freshman Aveya Stone erupting for a career-high 5 kills and London Haberfield serving a crucial ace during a key second-set run.
Riding a wave of confidence with four sweeps in their six-match streak, the Mustangs now turn their attention to the Big West Conference. They open at home next weekend against CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield.
