Mustangs Fall in 2025 Opener at San Jose State, 2-0
8/21/2025 9:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN JOSE – San Jose State found the back of the Cal Poly men's soccer net with its only two shots on frame of Thursday evening's regular season opener as the Mustangs sustained a 2-0 setback to start 2025 at Spartan Soccer Complex.
Senior forward Oren Stuppel (4') and freshman defender Michael Vick (21') produced first-half shots on target for Cal Poly and the Mustangs closed a scoreless opening half by limiting San Jose State to just one total attempt.
Into the second half, Cal Poly sophomore forward Roman Anast was turned away by Spartans goalkeeper Edgar Guerra in the 53rd and 58th minutes before the hosts broke the deadlock in the 60th with their first shot on goal of the evening as midfielder Angel Fernandez's strike from nearly 30 yards bested senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune at the right post.
The Spartans then doubled their lead on 82 minutes as forward Arnold Matshazi took advantage of a Cal Poly misstouch outside of the penalty area to score from 25 yards.
Cal Poly's last chance to break through came in the 87th, but Guerra made his fifth and final save after an attempt by senior defender Parker Owens.
"Congratulations to a very good San Jose State team. They have some fantastic attacking players. We felt we did a decent job stopping them from playing at times but, unfortunately, not enough to keep them off the scoresheet," third-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We created some good chances ourselves and on another night maybe they go for you and the result is different. But, overall, we know we have to be more ruthless in these key moments."
Defending Big West regular season champion Cal Poly, opening the season with a four-game road trip, continues action Saturday, Aug. 30 at California Baptist. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 7:30 p.m.
