Mustangs Sustain 2-0 Saturday Setback at California Baptist

RIVERSIDE – Cal Poly men's soccer senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune made five second-half saves Saturday evening, but a first-half penalty from California Baptist midfielder Drew Hardin and a second-half strike by forward Blake D'Agostino marked the difference as the Mustangs fell, 2-0.
"We're disappointed with the result, but, as a team, our performance wasn't far off where we need it to be," Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "Our boys competed hard and created enough good chances. We have to just keep focused on performance and know that is what will get us the outcomes we want."
Cal Poly forced California Baptist goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego into two saves inside the opening five minutes, but it was the Lancers who found the breakthrough goal on 19 minutes after Mustang junior defender Parker Owens was cited for barging into forward Felix Ezekwuka in the penalty area. Hardin stepped to the spot and converted his penalty attempt to hand the hosts the 1-0 advantage.
Into the second half, McCune chalked up his first saves of 2025 in the 46th and 49th minutes and sophomore forward Finn Linas saw a diving 53rd-minute header turned away by Do Rego.
McCune recorded another save in the 71st but, two minutes later, the Lancers turned Cal Poly over in its own half before defender Leon Suzuki played a ball upfield for D'Agostino, who fired past McCune.
The Mustangs enjoyed one final opportunity two minutes from full time, but Owens saw a header strike the cross bar.
Cal Poly (0-2-0) completes its season-opening, four-match road trip with visits to Air Force (Friday, Sept. 5) and No. 21 Denver (Monday, Sept. 8).
"We rest up, we go again on what will be a fantastic opportunity for our guys on the road in Colorado," Kennedy added.
