STANFORD – Senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune chalked up three saves Saturday evening, but the Cal Poly men's soccer program completed regular season preparations with a 1-0 exhibition setback at No. 13 Stanford.
Cal Poly produced Saturday's opening attempt on frame with sophomore forward Quinn Mahoney turned away by Stanford goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly on 11 minutes. McCune, meanwhile, thwarted Cardinal forward Liam Doyle 28 seconds before the break to keep the matchup scoreless through the initial 45 minutes.
However, the Cardinal – who reached the third round of last year's NCAA Tournament – broke through with the opening attempt of the second half as forward Shane de Flores found the back of Cal Poly's net four minutes after the restart.
McCune registered saves in the 50th, 52nd and 72nd minutes, but Cal Poly was held without a second-half shot attempt.
Selected second in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll, defending champion Cal Poly opens the 2025 regular season on Thursday, Aug. 21 at San Jose State. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
