SAN LUIS OBISPO – Highlighted by senior righthander Kate Judy’s All-Big West second team selection Tuesday afternoon, three of the Cal Poly softball program’s four all-conference honorees earned recognition for the first time.
Judy was joined among Cal Poly’s honorees by senior catcher Julia Barnett and junior outfielder Kiara Blanchard, who both earned honorable mention recognition. Outfielder Maddy Bermudez, meanwhile, was named to the Big West All-Freshman Team.
Judy, who earned her first career all-conference award, finished sixth among Big West pitchers with 24 starts and eighth with a 3.10 ERA. Striking out a season best eight hitters at UC Davis (March 15), Judy also topped Cal Poly’s staff with 28 appearances, 119.2 innings pitched and eight complete games.
Barnett, named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year a season ago, finished the regular season 14th among NCAA Division I catchers having thrown out 16 baserunners. Second among Cal Poly’s starters with a .983 fielding percentage, Barnett – offensively – led the Mustangs with 21 RBI and six multi-RBI games while hitting a career best .273. Before an injury ruled her out of Cal Poly’s final series of the season at Long Beach State (May 2-3), Barnett had started 134 straight games for Cal Poly.
Blanchard, also an honorable mention selection last spring, finished second among Big West players with 13 doubles while leading Cal Poly with 62 total bases, 18 runs, three homers, 10 multi-hit games and a .311 batting average in conference play. Blanchard reached base in 34 of Cal Poly’s final 39 games.
Bermudez became Cal Poly’s ninth all-time Big West All-Freshman Team selection after leading the Mustangs with a .284 batting average, 40 hits, 10 multi-hit games and nine stolen bases. Having hit safely a team best 30 times, Bermudez batted .301 in Big West play. Bermudez was one of only two Mustangs to start all 47 games and the only freshman to do so.
