SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After dropping the doubles point, the Cal Poly men's tennis team rallied with five singles victories — including four in straight sets — to secure a 5-2 home win over Creighton on Tuesday at the Ronca Tennis Center.
In their first match since opening Big West play at UC San Diego on March 2, the Mustangs (5-8) started the dual by coming up short in a tightly-contested battle for the double point. The Bluejays (8-5) won 6-4 at No. 1 and then Sean Ferguson and Aaron Eliscu fell in a tiebreaker at No. 3, 7-6 (7-4). John Cross and Wian Roothman were leading 6-5 at No. 2 when Creighton clinched the doubles point.
In singles play, Cal Poly quickly flipped the script on the Bluejays with a handful of decisive victories.
Eliscu got things started with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 for his first dual singles win of the season, then Raz Haviv gave Cal Poly a 2-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1.
Roothman rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 6 and just seconds later Ferguson clinched the dual for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4.
Sean Kamyshev earned the most dramatic victory of the day for the Mustangs. After dropping the first set in his match at No. 2, Kamyshev stormed back and won 12 straight games to pick up his second consecutive victory, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
Jack McGary lost a hard-fought match at No. 3, 5-7, 6-1, 4-6.
Cal Poly hosts Boise State at 6 p.m. next Wednesday, March 19, at the Ronca Tennis Center to continue its three-match homestand.
