SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team picked up its seventh victory in eight matches Monday, downing Loyola Marymount 4-3 at the Ronca Tennis Center.
With the win, the 38th-ranked Mustangs improved to 10-3 on the season, their best start since starting the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season 11-2.
Playing at the No. 2 spot for the first time this season, senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock secured a 6-2 victory together in doubles to improve to 6-3, but the Mustangs dropped the doubles point to open the dual.
Fortunately, Cal Poly has shined in singles play all season long, and they continued that trend on Monday to tame the Lions (2-7).
At No. 5, freshman Jessica MacCallum leveled the match at 1-1 with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory, improving to 10-3 on the year and 8-1 at the fifth spot in the lineup. She has now won nine of her last 10 singles matches.
Senior Peyton Dunkle gave Cal Poly a 2-1 lead with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2, moving to 7-2 on the year. The win allowed her to move into a tie with Chelsy Thompson for sixth on Cal Poly's all-time career dual singles victories list with 44.
LMU squared the match up at 2-2 with a win at No. 1, before sophomore Natalie Lynch put the Mustangs back in front with a victory in straight sets at No. 6, improving to 8-3 on the year.
Then junior Alexandra Ozerets stepped up and provided the dual-clinching point for the Mustangs for the fourth time this season, defeating her opponent at No. 4 in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. She moved to 9-3 on the season and 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.
Mosse won the first set in her match at No. 3 in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5), before coming up short in three sets.
The Mustangs remain at home to host two more matches this week. Cal Poly welcomes Santa Clara to the Ronca Tennis Center at noon Saturday before taking on Big West foe CSUN at noon Sunday to cap off the weekend. During Saturday's match, the Cal Poly women's tennis team will be raising awareness for nephrotic syndrome, a rare kidney disease.
