SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by five straight-set singles victories, the Cal Poly women’s tennis team cruised to an emphatic 7-0 win over UC Riverside on Wednesday at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The shutout win allowed the Mustangs (12-8, 7-1 Big West) to setup a showdown with Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ronca Tennis Center, with the winner earning the No. 1 seed in next week’s Big West Championships.
Wednesday’s sweep over the Highlanders (4-18, 0-9 BW) started with an impressive showing in doubles. The Mustangs shook up their doubles lineup with juniors Candela Aparisi and Natalie Lynch moving up from No. 2 to No. 1, senior Kennedy Buntrock and freshman Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako playing together for the first time this spring at No. 2, and sisters Sarah MacCallum and Jessica MacCallum taking the court at No. 3.
Buntrock and Jakupovic-Kljako rolled at No. 2, 6-2, and then Aparisi and Lynch continued their strong season together by securing a 6-3 win at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point. Aparisi and Lynch are a team-best 11-5 this season and 5-0 in conference play.
In singles play, the Mustangs wasted no time closing out the dual win. Lynch earned the first victory, winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 to move to 11-7 on the year. Senior Alexandra Ozerets, the program leader in dual singles victories, was the next to finish her match, dominating her opponent 6-2, 6-0 to improve to 12-8 this year. It was her 56th career dual singles win.
Jessica MacCallum put the Mustangs up 4-0 and sealed the dual win with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 2. Her older sister, Sarah, then captured a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6 to move to 7-1 in Big West matches this season, and just moments later Buntrock closed out her match at No. 1 (6-1, 6-3) and improved to 11-6 on the year.
The lone singles match that went to a third set was at No. 3 as Aparisi looked to keep her winning streak alive. After winning the first set 6-1, she lost the second 2-6 before bouncing back to claim a 6-3 third-set win. It was her sixth straight singles win and she improved to 12-7 and 6-1 in conference play.
Cal Poly improved to 27-0 all-time against UCR.
Cal Poly can earn at least a share of the Big West regular season title with a win against the first-place and No. 48 nationally-ranked Gauchos at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Mustangs have already locked up a top two seed in the Big West Championships on April 22-25 in San Diego and a double bye to the tournament semifinals. The Mustangs will honor their three graduating seniors — Kennedy Buntrock, Sarah MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets — following the match.
