SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It might not be officially spring, but Cal Poly football is starting its official spring ball practices earlier than normal this year with the first of 15 practice sessions beginning Monday.
Normally in April in years past, Cal Poly will conduct spring ball this year Feb. 10-March 8. The team will practice about four times per week with it culminating on March 8 with the spring game.
Despite losing a few key players from last year, including defensive end Elijah Ponder who will likely hear his name called in the upcoming NFL draft, the Mustangs return 86 players from last year’s roster, two of which earned All-Big Sky honors in redshirt junior safety Mason Rivera and redshirt senior defensive lineman Ethan Rodriguez.
On the offensive side of the ball, Cal Poly returns all five of its quarterbacks from last season while having added Ty Dieffenbach, a transfer from Pitt. Two of the Mustangs’ top three receivers from last season are back in Michael Briscoe and Logan Booher.
Defensively, Rivera and Rodriguez highlight the returners on that side of the ball but there are several other key pieces back as well. Starters that return on defense include: safety Brian Dukes Jr, linebackers Je’kob Jones and Kenny Olson, defensive end Thomas Bouda, and cornerback Delano Franklin.
On special teams, the Mustangs return starting kicker Noah Serna as well as punter Jesse Ehrlich and long snapper Spencer Moore.
The Mustangs will have 10 new players joining them for spring ball who have enrolled early at Cal Poly. Six of them are freshmen and four of them are college transfers. The new additions include two quarterbacks, two cornerbacks, three offensive linemen, one tight end, one wide receiver, and one linebacker.
