Mustangs Fall on the Road to Idaho State

POCATELLO, ID – Mustang quarterback Ty Dieffenbach racked up over 300 yards of total offense, but the Cal Poly football team fell on the road Saturday to Idaho State, 27-17.
Dieffenbach rushed 18 times for 142 yards, including 87 in the first half, and a score. He also threw for 172 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Michael Briscoe led the Mustangs (3-7, 1-5 Big Sky) with five receptions for 81 yards. Defensively, linebacker Mikey D’Amato led the team in tackles with 12.
On the first drive of the game, Idaho State drove down 74 yards in six plays as a 17-yard touchdown pass put the Bengals on the board first, 7-0. Idaho State scored another touchdown on its second drive of the game following a punt by the Mustangs. A 91-yard drive was finished with a three-yard touchdown run by Bengal quarterback Jordan Cooke.
Cal Poly’s offense, which had been held quiet for much of the first 25 minutes, got going the final five minutes of the first half. The Mustangs put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive, much of which was done by Dieffenbach running. Dieffenbach got the Mustangs on the board with a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 14-7. Idaho State then closed the half with a touchdown of its own, a five-yard run with 10 seconds left to make it 21-7 at the half.
Dieffenbach was intercepted to open the second half, which the Bengals turned into a field goal to make it 24-7. Cal Poly responded with a 36-yard field goal by Noah Serna on the next drive to make it 24-10 at the end of the third quarter.
A field goal by Idaho State with nine minutes left in the fourth made it 27-10. With 2:30 left in the fourth, Dieffenbach found wide receiver Fidel Pitts in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown to make it 27-17. However, the clock would run out on the Mustangs.
Cal Poly will stay on the road next week when traveling to Flagstaff to take on Northern Arizona on Saturday, Nov. 15 for a 1 p.m. PT kickoff.
