
Mustangs Fall at Home to No. 5 Montana State

Quarterback Bo Kelly, who came in during the second quarter, was 20-30 passing for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Defensively, linebackers Mikey D'Amato and Kenny Olson once again led the Mustangs (3-5, 1-3 Big Sky) in tackles. D'Amato finished with 16 while Olson had 10.
It was a defensive battle in the first quarter with neither team scoring until three minutes left. Montana State got on the board first with a field goal following a 15-play, 56-yard drive to go up 3-0.
Montana State scored the game's first touchdown with just over eight minutes to go in the second quarter. A four-play, 45-yard drive was capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass which gave the Bobcats a 10-0 lead. Cal Poly cut into that lead on its next drive, going 72 yards in 12 plays, resulting in a 21-yard field goal by Noah Serna to make it 10-3 with just under three minutes left in the half.
Montana State closed the half with a 31-yard field goal after an eight-play, 30-yard drive that started following an interception by the Mustangs to make it 13-3 Bobcats at the half.
Montana State opened the second half with a touchdown drive of 73-yards on seven plays, finished with a 10-yard touchdown run to make it 20-3. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Montana State pushed the lead to 27-3 following a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback Justin Lamson to finish a nine-play, 80-yard drive.
Cal Poly put together its best drive of the night early in the fourth as Kelly led a six-play, 77-yard drive that he finished off with a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Fidel Pitts, his first receiving touchdown as a Mustang. On Montana State's ensuing drive, Cal Poly's defense forced a fumble and recovered it to get the ball back to the offense. The Mustang offense then went 56 yards in seven plays for a touchdown, a six-yard pass from Kelly to wide receiver Logan Booher to make it 27-17 with just over eight minutes left in the game.
Montana State responded with a touchdown drive of eight plays and 40 yards over a span of four minutes to push its lead back up to 17, 34-17 with three minutes to play.
Cal Poly will be at home again next Saturday, Nov. 1 to take on Portland State at Mustang Memorial Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
