The Mustangs (4-2) received some national attention for their strong start to the season Thursday, checking in at No. 56 in the latest ITA team rankings. It’s the first time Cal Poly has been ranked since ending last season ranked 68th in the country and marks the program’s highest national ranking since Feb. 22, 2012, when they were ranked No. 55.
In their last appearance on the court, Cal Poly put on a commanding performance at home against formerly undefeated San Jose State this past Sunday, sweeping the Spartans 4-0.
Freshman Jessica MacCallum shined on the court, picking up her fourth-straight singles victory, winning 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot to clinch the dual for the Mustangs. Senior Peyton Dunkle delivered a double bagel (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 2 singles spot to improve to 2-1 on the season, while junior Alexandra Ozerets earned a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, improving to 4-1 on the year.
In doubles play, Dunkle and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather earned a dominant 6-1 win at No. 2 before the No. 1 tandem of senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph.
The shutout victory marked the Mustangs' second in their last three matches, following a dominant 7-0 win over Washington State on Feb. 7.
Gonzaga enters Friday’s match with a 5-2 record, most recently suffering a 7-0 loss to Washington on Feb. 9. The Bulldogs own victories over Michigan State, Eastern Washington, New Mexico State, New Mexico and Air Force this season. Last year in Spokane, Cal Poly earned a 6-1 victory over Gonzaga, who finished the 2024 season with an 8-14 record.
Grand Canyon boasted an impressive 22-3 record last season to advance to its second straight NCAA Tournament and currently sits at 4-4 this season. The Antelopes most recently earned a 7-0 win at Pacific this past Sunday. GCU has faced a pair of Big West opponents this year that the Mustangs will encounter later this season, defeating UC San Diego in Phoenix 6-1 to open its season and falling at home to Cal State Fullerton 4-3. Last year, Cal Poly fell to the Antelopes 4-0 in Phoenix. GCU will battle Gonzaga in a neutral-site match at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Ronca Tennis Center before facing the Mustangs.
This spring, the Mustangs aim to build on one of their most successful seasons in program history under third-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams. Last year, Cal Poly stormed through the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed to capture its second Big West Championship in program history. The triumph secured the Mustangs a spot in the NCAA Championships for the third time in school history and the first time since 2011.
Following this week’s action, Cal Poly hits the road for the first time in over a month to face Sacramento State on Friday, Feb. 28, at noon, followed by UC Davis on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m.
