Season Opener at San Francisco Ends in Draw

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal Poly men's soccer program forced San Francisco goalkeeper Eric Waltz into four saves Thursday evening, but the Mustangs failed to find the back of the Negoesco Stadium net and finished the 2024 season-opening matchup in a scoreless draw.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune was called upon to make just a solitary save for Cal Poly (0-0-1), which enjoyed the first shot on target in the 12th minute as Waltz turned away the first of two attempts by junior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa.
Sophomore midfielder Jackson Miller was stopped in the 27th by Waltz before Ramakatsa was thwarted once more in the 34th.
Held to four shot attempts during the first half by Cal Poly, San Francisco eventually challenged McCune in the 53rd minute with Dons forward Zane Alafranji halted.
The Mustangs added one more shot on target in the 71st through freshman forward Finn Linas.
Cal Poly then saved the draw a minute from full time with sophomore defender Joaquin Torres blocking an attempt by Dons forward Isaiah Easley
Cal Poly continues its season-opening, four-game road trip on Sunday, Aug. 25 at Saint Mary's. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
