Clements Setting a Record Pace for Cal Poly in 2024

SAN LUIS OBISPO – All-American outfielder Lisa Modglin holds both the Cal Poly and Big West single season records for batting average, having hit .476 in 2007.
Modglin also owns Cal Poly's career batting average mark at .369 while Cal State Fullerton All-American catcher and Olympic gold medalist Jenny Topping has maintained the Big West's career mark of .443 for 21 seasons.
All records, however, have the opportunity of being challenged and eclipsed should Mustang junior center fielder Jessica Clements continue on her current historic hitting pace.
A starter in all of Cal Poly's 118 games since the beginning of her 2022 freshman season, Clements enters action this week leading every Division I player – more than 6,400 of them have played at least one game in 2024 – with a .505 (49-for-97) batting average. The only Division I player hitting above .500 as of April 2, Clements leads North Carolina junior outfielder Alex Coleman by 10 points in the national batting race (the Tar Heels visit UNC Wilmington Wednesday).
Clements opened the 2024 season on Feb. 9 with a combined 2-for-6 performance and .333 batting average as the Mustangs defeated both San Jose State and Sacramento State. Clements went 3-for-3 against Middle Tennessee the following morning and her batting average hasn't fallen below .500 since.
Having hit safely in 24 of 28 matchups with 19 multi-hit efforts (and six three-hit games), Clements also ranks 17th among Division I players with 49 hits. Additionally, she leads the Big West with 68 total bases and ranks second with both a .568 on-base percentage and .701 slugging percentage.
Averaging 1.8 hits per game, Clements – intentionally walked on five occasions this season – has struck out just four times in 113 plate appearances.
Already the top hitter in program history entering the season, Clements takes a .420 (172-for-410) career mark into the program's April 5-6 series at Hawai'i. Ranked 15th in Cal Poly history with 172 career hits, she remains 64 shy of Modglin's career mark of 236.
