Barrett Earns First Big West Field Player of the Week Honor

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Hitting safely to help fuel the Cal Poly softball program's April 12-13, three-game road sweep of Cal State Bakersfield, Mustang senior first baseman Kai Barrett earned her first career Big West Field Player of the Week honor Monday afternoon.
Making just her third conference appearance of the year entering Cal Poly's April 12 series opener at Cal State Bakersfield, Barrett produced a single and scored twice in a 10-1, five-inning victory. She returned in Friday's second game with another single.
During the April 13 series finale, however, Barrett became just the second Mustang this year with a four-hit game as Cal Poly completed the sweep with a 6-2, eight-inning victory. She produced a sixth-inning RBI single to hand the Mustangs a 2-1 lead and, in the top of the eighth, singled a fourth time before scoring one of Cal Poly's four runs.
Hitting just .214 through 20 appearances entering Cal Poly's April 5-6 series at Hawai'i, Barrett has batted .692 (9-for-13) in her last five outings to raise her season mark to .299 (20-for-67).
Monday's honor was Barrett's first since earning Big West Freshman of the Week praise on May 17, 2021.
With the sweep, Cal Poly (21-12, 11-3) moved within a half game of second place Long Beach State (17-24, 12-3) in the Big West standings. The Mustangs next host The Beach for a three-game, April 20-21 series.
