SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its home and Big West opener, Cal Poly women's tennis cruised to a 6-1 victory over UC Davis (2-5, 0-2 Big West) on Saturday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
It's the Mustangs' (3-0, 1-0 Big West) third straight 6-1 dual win. Cal Poly opened the spring season with 6-1 victories over Montana and Gonzaga on Jan. 20-21 in Spokane.
Cal Poly opened the dual by securing the doubles point once again. Fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle took care of business comfortably at the No. 1 spot, grabbing a 6-1 win to improve to 3-0 as a pairing on the season. Then at the No. 3 spot, junior Romane Mosse and sophomore Sarah MacCallum teamed up in doubles for the first time and secured a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs. With the victory, MacCallum improved to 4-1 in doubles in her career at Cal Poly while Mosse moved to 3-0 on the season.
Sophomores Kennedy Buntrock and Alexandra Ozerets slid up to the No. 2 doubles spot for Saturday's dual and were leading their match 5-4 when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles, a pair of commanding victories in straight sets from Peyton at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4) and Ozerets at No. 5 (6-0, 6-3) allowed Cal Poly to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. Both players improved to 3-0 on the season.
At No. 4, Buntrock dropped the second set, but bounced back in the third to capture a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 victory to clinch the match for the Mustangs. She moved to 3-0 on the year with the win.
After falling 6-1 in the first set of her match at No. 6, MacCallum showed a lot of heart, rallying to earn a 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory in her first career singles match.
In a battle at the No. 1 singles spot, Delanie emerged victorious over the reigning Big West Women's Tennis Player of the Week Arianna Stavropoulos. After dropping the first 6-4, Delanie grabbed a 6-2 win in the second set and outlasted Stavropoulos in a thrilling tiebreaker in the third set 7-6 (7-5) to pick up her second singles victory of the season.
Mosse won the first set in her match at No. 3, but ultimately suffered her first singles defeat of the season.
Cal Poly returns to nonconference action this upcoming week for a pair of road matches. The Mustangs head to San Jose State on Friday, Feb. 9, and San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 10.
