3 Players Remain Perfect in Singles, Cal Poly Suffers First Defeat

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Junior Peyton Dunkle and sophomores Kennedy Buntrock and Alexandra Ozerets all improved to 4-0 in singles play, but the Cal Poly women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling at San Jose State 4-3.
For the first time this season, the Mustangs (3-1) dropped the doubles point with defeats at No. 1 and No. 3. However, graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse grabbed a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot to move to 3-0 as a pairing.
In singles, SJSU (3-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with at No. 1, but the Mustangs fought back and knotted the match at 2-2 thanks to straight-set victories from Ozerets at No. 5 (6-4, 6-3) and Buntrock at No. 3 (6-3, 7-5).
In her first action of the spring season, junior Eliza Bates came up short in her singles match at No. 6, allowing the Spartans to regain a 3-2 advantage. But Peyton evened the dual once again, earning a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory at No. 2 to make it 3-3.
It all came down to No. 4 and the Spartans were able to secure a win in straight sets to hand Cal Poly its first loss.
Peyton, No. 2 all-time in Division I program history in winning percentage in dual singles matches, improved to 3-0 in her career playing at the No. 2 singles spot.
The Mustangs will look to rebound when they face San Francisco (2-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Spartan Tennis Complex to wrap up their trip to San Jose.
