Cal Poly Finishes in 1-1 Wednesday Draw with UC Irvine
10/23/2024 10:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune (above) recorded a career high seven saves – including three during an 86th-minute sequence – and freshman forward Quinn Mahoney scored his team leading fourth goal of the year Wednesday evening, but the Cal Poly men's soccer program finished in a 1-1 draw with UC Irvine at Mustang Memorial Field.
Entering Wednesday's matchup tied for first place atop the Big West standings, Cal Poly (6-4-6, 3-1-3) improved to 12 points, but slipped to second place after UC Santa Barbara (10-3-3, 4-1-2) outlasted last-place CSUN, 4-3, with the Gauchos taking over sole possession of the top spot on 14 points.
With two matchdays remaining in the regular season, Cal Poly leads Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Fullerton by one point, UC Irvine and UC Riverside by two points and seventh-place UC San Diego by three.
Cal Poly closes the regular season when visiting CSUN on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. and hosting Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. Both matches stream on ESPN+.
"UC Irvine are a well-seasoned team that have players with a lot of postseason experience – including last year's NCAA tournament. They're used to playing tight games and are extremely well coached, so we knew that it was going to be a very tough game," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We can certainly be proud of how we competed and how many attacking chances we created."
Cal Poly found the back of UC Irvine's net after just four minutes with a throw-in from graduate defender Jack Muoio reaching the UC Irvine penalty area and finding Mahoney, who fired past Anteaters goalkeeper Luke Pruter.
The Mustangs produced 18 shot attempts Wednesday, but tested Pruter just twice more with junior Oren Stuppel stopped on 31 minutes and fellow forward Ashton Alonge turned away in the 50th.
At the opposite end, McCune preserved Cal Poly's early advantage with two first-half saves. The Anteaters, however, broke through in the 55th with forward Misael Gutierrez scoring his third of the year.
However, McCune – who conceded just his second goal in seven Big West matches – produced his fourth save just a minute later before turning away UC Irvine three times in the 86th to help Cal Poly to the draw.
"We started both halves well and put ourselves in a great position in the game, but just needed to be a little bit more ruthless on the attacking side of the ball," Kennedy said. "Defensively, we needed some big saves from Nicky, some blocked shots and defenders willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of the team. The guys showed a lot of bravery in these big moments."
