Mustangs Draw at CSUN to Set Up Dramatic Final Day
10/26/2024 10:03:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE – Sophomore defender Joaquin (above) canceled out an early CSUN penalty with his first goal of the season – a 59th-minute free-kick strike – but the Cal Poly men's soccer program finished in a 1-1 draw Saturday evening at Matador Soccer Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune produced four saves for Cal Poly (6-4-7, 3-1-4), which improved to 13 points in the Big West table, but slipped from second into a third-place tie alongside UC Irvine (7-7-2, 4-3-1), which defeated Sacramento State earlier Saturday, 3-1.
Both Cal Poly and UC Irvine trail leader UC Santa Barbara (10-3-4, 4-1-3) by just two points and second-place Cal State Bakersfield (7-4-4, 4-2-2) by one heading into the final matchday. UC Santa Barbara had a chance to secure at least a share of the regular season title before drawing at home to Cal State Fullerton after the Titans scored in the 89th minute.
With all four programs still eligible to clinch the regular season title and the top seed for the Nov. 6, 9 and 15 Big West Championship, Cal Poly closes the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2 with an 8 p.m. home matchup against Cal State Bakersfield on ESPN+. A Cal Poly win, coupled with a UC Irvine loss or draw at UC San Diego, clinches the Mustangs no worse than a top two seed for the Big West Championship and a bye to the semifinals.
"The performance tonight was not perfect and it's always going to be tough away from home," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "As a team when maybe you're not playing as well it's important to show resilience and grit and all of the guys showed that tonight. We fought hard in the second half to get back into the game and showed maturity to come away with a point on the road.
"At the start of the season, we set out some goals for ourselves and I'm proud that as we go into the last regular season game all of those goals are within reach. We're excited to play at home and also honor some very important seniors next weekend. They've given so much for the program and we're locked in on giving them more opportunities at the end of the year."
Cal Poly kept CSUN without a shot attempt until the 12th minute Saturday, when McCune and Matadors defender Deryk Jones, Jr. collided inside the penalty area with both players attempting to chase down the ball. It was McCune that was whistled for the penalty and Matadors forward Marley Edwards converted the attempt to hand the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs, meanwhile, forced CSUN goalkeeper Merrick Cook into a solitary first-half save with freshman forward Colin Pearce turned away in the 41st.
A foul on senior forward Ashton Alonge in the 59th, however, earned the Mustangs a free kick four yards outside the penalty box. Torres took the opportunity and fired into the top left corner of the CSUN net and over a diving Cook.
McCune, meanwhile, chalked up three second half saves during a five-minute window to help preserve Cal Poly's road point.
