Mustangs Prevail in Big West Opener at UC Davis, 1-0
10/2/2024 6:34:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DAVIS – Junior forward Oren Stuppel's (above) first goal of the season helped separate the Cal Poly men's soccer program from UC Davis Wednesday afternoon as the Mustangs prevailed in their Big West opening match at Aggie Soccer Field, 1-0.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune produced three saves to record his fifth shutout of the season for Cal Poly (4-3-3, 1-0-0), which extended its unbeaten run to six matches – the program's lengthiest since two identical streaks in 2015. Cal Poly also prevailed in a Big West opener for the first time since 2017.
"The boys battled really well today against a very good UC Davis team," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "[UC Davis] is always a tough team to compete against and the hot conditions made it a little harder to get a good rhythm in the game. [UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer] always does a fantastic job with his team and they make it one of the hardest road trips in college soccer. They had the ball in dangerous areas and put some great service into the box, so our defenders and keeper really had to stay focused for the 90 minutes."
Held to just five shot attempts by UC Davis, the Mustangs struck the game-winner with their second attempt on target in the 27th minute after freshman midfielder Quinn Mahoney split multiple UC Davis defenders with a pass up the center of the field. Stuppel latched on to the through ball, took a touch a looped his attempt over Aggies goalkeeper Noah Schwengeler for the 1-0 advantage.
With his second collegiate goal and first since Cal Poly's 2023 season opener against Oral Roberts, Stuppel became the program's eighth different goalscorer this season.
At the other end of Aggie Soccer Field, McCune – who has allowed just one goal from open play in his last 536 minutes and lowered his season goals against average to 0.80 – recorded his first save 34 seconds from the break to preserve Cal Poly's lead. He chalked up two more saves in the 60th and 75th minutes to keep Cal Poly on track for three points.
"Our whole team takes responsibility and accountability for our defending, so the clean sheet is a great award for that," Kennedy said.
Cal Poly resumes action on Sunday, Oct. 6, renewing the Blue-Green rivalry at UC Santa Barbara eight days after the Mustangs handed the Gauchos a 2-0 defeat in San Luis Obispo. With a nationally televised broadcast on ESPNU, kickoff is 4 p.m.
"We're really excited to get back home and begin our work toward the second rivalry game against UCSB," Kennedy added. "It's going to be a fun one to compete in. We know they have an exciting group of attacking players, but we love the opportunity to compete in front of one of the largest crowds in collegiate soccer. The atmosphere will be electric and we'll ready to go."
