Mustangs Back in First with 1-0 Win at Cal State Fullerton
10/19/2024 9:51:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior forward Oren Stuppel's 53rd-minute strike helped decide the Cal Poly men's soccer program's 1-0 Saturday victory against Cal State Fullerton as the Mustangs moved back into a share of first place atop the Big West table at Titan Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune recorded five saves to earn his Big West leading seventh shutout of the season for Cal Poly (6-4-5, 3-1-2), which improved to 11 points in the conference standings to rejoin UC Santa Barbara (9-3-3, 3-1-2) and Cal State Bakersfield (6-3-4, 3-1-2) at the top of the table. With three regular season matchdays remaining, the trio lead UC San Diego, Sacramento State and UC Irvine by just two points.
Playing two of those final three matches at home, Cal Poly resumes action when hosting UC Irvine on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
"I thought tonight was all about having the right mindset and belief in what we can do as a group," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We had a game plan tactically that we felt would work, but also, we were able to adjust when we needed. For the boys to execute at the level they did is truly impressive.
"We'll always pride ourselves on being a rock-solid and hard team to play against and each one of the guys had that identity from the start of the game. We know it will take the whole group to give us the best opportunity of success this season and that's what the guys are motivated by right now."
With Stuppel (above) providing his second goal of the year and freshman forward Colin Pearce supplying his second collegiate assist, Cal Poly earned its first win at Cal State Fullerton since 2012, snapping a five-match slide at Titan Stadium.
After registering just one shot on target during the first half, Cal Poly found the game's only goal eight minutes after the restart with Pearce winning back possession at the top of Cal State Fullerton's penalty box and laying off for Stuppel. One touch and a shot later, Stuppel fired past Titans goalkeeper Brandon Limes for his first goal since an Oct. 2, Big West-opening game-winner at UC Davis.
Cal State Fullerton entered Saturday's match leading the Big West with 32 goals, but McCune turned away the Titans twice in the first half and twice more during the final 19 minutes to preserve Cal Poly's victory.
