Cal Poly Falls at UC San Diego, 1-0, to End Unbeaten Run
10/16/2024 9:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LA JOLLA – A 28th-minute strike from UC San Diego forward Kai Oppenheim separated the host Tritons from the Cal Poly men's soccer program Wednesday evening as the Mustangs saw a nine-match unbeaten run snapped with their first Big West defeat of the year, a 1-0 setback.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune – who conceded his first goal in 514 minutes – finished with a pair of saves for Cal Poly (5-4-5, 2-1-2), which was also leapfrogged by UC San Diego (4-6-4, 3-2-0) in the Big West table with the Tritons moving to nine points – one ahead of the now third-place Mustangs, Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Fullerton. UC Santa Barbara (3-0-2, 9-2-3), which defeated UC Davis on Wednesday, 3-1, took over sole possession of first place on 11 points.
The Mustangs complete a two-match road trip on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Cal Poly outshot UC San Diego, 12-11, but placed just two early attempts on target with freshman forward Finn Linas stopped by UC San Diego goalkeeper Nolan Premack in the third minute and junior defender Nico Baltazar turned away in the seventh.
McCune chalked up his first save in the 26th before the Tritons found Wednesday's lone goal after Oppenheim – on as a substitute for less than four minutes – latched on to a loose ball inside the penalty area following a corner kick, turned and fired into the back of the Cal Poly net to provide the hosts a 1-0 lead.
"We felt that we controlled the first 20 minutes of the game and had played well in possession, creating some OK chances," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "But we're frustrated to give up a goal in the way that we did as we pride ourselves on our defending. I think a lot of our sport can come down to who is first in both boxes attacking and defending and they did a better job than we did in this area tonight."
After UC San Diego midfielder Andrew McGee struck the right post in the 64th, Cal Poly produced five attempts in the final 15 minutes, but was unable to find an equalizer.
Freshman midfielder Quinn Mahoney (above) led Cal Poly with six shot attempts.
