Mustangs Finish in Saturday Draw with UCR; Stay in First
10/12/2024 10:20:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's soccer program kept UC Riverside without an attempt on target Saturday evening and outshot the Highlanders, 14-5, but the Mustangs – despite extending their unbeaten run to nine successive matches – settled for a scoreless draw at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
Freshman forward Finn Linas enjoyed a career high five shot attempts for Cal Poly (5-3-5, 2-0-2), which had the opportunity of taking sole possession of first place atop the Big West table with a victory Saturday, but dropped into a tie alongside Cal State Bakersfield (5-2-4, 2-0-2) and UC Santa Barbara (8-2-3, 2-0-2) on eight points apiece. The trio sit just one point ahead of Cal State Fullerton and two in front of UC San Diego with five regular season matches remaining.
Cal Poly's nine-match unbeaten run remains the program's lengthiest stretch since an 11-game streak in 2007. The Mustangs will have the opportunity to match that mark when resuming action at UC San Diego (Wednesday, Oct. 16) and Cal State Fullerton (Saturday, Oct. 19). Both matches kick off at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
"I think we come away from tonight a little frustrated with the tie," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We had more chances than UC Riverside and felt toward the end of the game we were still the aggressor and looking more dangerous.
"We're always looking for ways to improve and a big learning curve for us tonight is that we have to be more ruthless. We have to find that killer blow and, at times, we did a lot right, but didn't have enough of a ruthless streak. I think that will come as we go into the final stretch of the season. We'll be locked in on Wednesday now and ready to go on the road and battle down south."
Three-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week honoree and junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune earned his sixth shutout of 2024 Saturday – the fifth highest single season mark in program history. McCune has not allowed a goal in his last 487 minutes.
Offensively, Cal Poly forced UC Riverside goalkeeper Carlos Gonzalez into five saves – three of which occurred in the first half. The Mustangs produced four attempts in the 24th minute alone, but Linas had an attempt blocked, junior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa was stopped by Gonzalez, senior forward Conner Lisenbee fired wide and sophomore midfielder Diego Guerra was also blocked.
Mustang freshman forward Quinn Mahoney had two first-half attempts turned away by Gonzalez while sophomore defender Parker Owens (above) was also stopped in the 84th minute.
