Mustangs Outdistanced Late Saturday at Hawai’i, 83-73
1/27/2024 11:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HONOLULU, O'ahu – Senior guard Kobe Sanders (above) chalked up his first career double-double with 32 points and 10 rebounds, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after cutting a Saturday evening deficit at Hawai'i to three points at halftime – sustained an 83-73 setback to the Rainbow Warriors inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Junior guard Aidan Prukop added a career best 23 points – 14 more than his previous collegiate best – for Cal Poly (4-17, 0-9), which faced just a 26-23 disadvantage at the break before Hawai'i (11-10, 3-6) shot 57.1 (12-for-21) percent from the floor in the second half and converted 31 free throw attempts.
Playing the 152nd and final Division I men's basketball game on Saturday, Cal Poly scored 50 second-half points – the most conceded by Hawai'i this season – to cut its deficit to as few as seven with 33 seconds to play.
With the Mustangs consistently forced to foul late in the second half, however, Hawai'i sank 35 of 46 free throw attempts during the course of the night to stay in front.
Sanders, who knocked down nine field goals and finished 11-for-13 from the free throw line, produced his third 30-point game of the year while finishing one shy of his career high. His 10 boards were also the most by a Mustang this season.
Prukop, meanwhile, was 8-for-14 from the floor with four three-pointers.
Cal Poly resumes action and opens a two-game home stand when hosting Big West leader UC Irvine on Thursday, Feb. 1 on ESPN+.
During Saturday's matchup, Hawai'i carved out a 21-13 lead four-and-a-half minutes before the break before a Sanders three-pointer spurred a 10-5 Mustang run to close the half. In keeping the Rainbow Warriors to just three field goals in their final 12 attempts of the half, Cal Poly cut its deficit to 26-23 heading into the locker room.
Hawai'i, however, scored the initial nine points of the second half to claim the evening's first double-digit lead, stretching the advantage as far as 35-23 with 15 minutes to play.
Still facing a 47-40 deficit with eight-and-a-half minutes remaining, Cal Poly was kept without a field goal for five minutes as Hawai'i stretched its lead as far as 64-46.
Behind 23 second-half points from Sanders, however, Cal Poly clawed back to a 69-61 disadvantage with two minutes, 14 seconds left before Hawai'i knocked down seven of an ensuing eight free throw attempts to keep the Mustangs at distance.
