2/1/2024 9:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior guard Kobe Sanders (above) finished with 23 points – remaining in double-digit scoring figures in all 20 appearances this season – but the Cal Poly men's basketball program opened a two-game home stand Thursday evening with a 73-59 setback to Big West leader UC Irvine.
Junior center Joel Armotrading added nine points for Cal Poly (4-18, 0-10), which traded 11 lead changes with UC Irvine (16-6, 9-1), but trailed for the entirety of the second half.
Junior forward Paul Bizimana matched his Cal Poly high with eight rebounds for the Mustangs, who limited UC Irvine to a 44.4 (28-for-63) percent field goal mark.
Cal Poly concludes its two-game home stand on Saturday, Feb. 3 against UC Davis at 3 p.m. on ESPN+. At halftime, Cal Poly will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its 2013-14 Big West Tournament championship squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
UC Irvine opened up a 21-13 after eight minutes Thursday before the Mustangs – keyed by three-pointers from Sanders and junior guard Aidan Prukop – produced a 12-2 run to go up 25-23. The two sides traded the lead five more times before Sanders shortened UC Irvine's lead to 35-32 at the break with a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
During a second half in which the Anteaters shot 53.1 (17-for-32) percent, Cal Poly cut UC Irvine's advantage to 55-51 with six-and-a-half minutes to play following a Bizimana turnaround jumper. The Anteaters though scored on four straight possessions, assuming a 12-point lead in just two minutes.
