Freshman Kamyshev Clinches 4-3 Cal Poly Win over New Mexico in Season Opener

ALBUQUERQUE — In his first match as a Mustang, freshman Sean Kamyshev came up clutch for Cal Poly, clinching the 4-3 road victory over New Mexico in Cal Poly men's tennis' season opener Friday.
The Mustangs started the match by winning the doubles point. After the Lobos took the No. 2 doubles spot, Cal Poly's No. 1 duo of senior Colter Smith and junior Bastiaan Weststrate won their match 6-4. The Mustangs' No. 3 tandem of freshmen Kamyshev and Raz Haviv then clinched the doubles point after winning their match 6-4.
New Mexico tied it up 1-1 shortly into singles play after Mustang senior Fernando Fonseca had to retire during the second game of the first set. Colter Smith then gave the Mustangs the lead back after winning his match at the No. 2 spot 6-3, 6-2.
The Lobos tied it back up at 2-2 after getting a win at the No. 1 spot. Weststrate then won his match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot to put Cal Poly ahead 3-2 with two matches still going.
The match victory was later clinched by Kamyshev at the No. 6 spot after he came back to win his match in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Cal Poly will stay in Albuquerque Saturday to play a neutral site match against East Tennessee State at 1 p.m. PT.
