Mustangs Shutout UC Riverside at Home Wednesday, 4-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly men's tennis looked very comfortable playing back at home for the first time in nearly three weeks, cruising to a dominant 4-0 shutout victory over UC Riverside Wednesday afternoon at Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (6-8, 1-1 BW) got things started by taking the doubles point over the Highlanders (5-14, 0-4 BW). The No. 2 pairing of junior Colter Smith and sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate, playing together for the first time this season, were quick to finish their match, winning 6-1. The No. 1 duo of juniors Noah Berry and Fernando Fonseca then clinched the point for Cal Poly after coming up victorious in their match, 6-2.
The strong play continued once singles got going as Weststrate put the Mustangs ahead 2-0 after winning at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-1 to improve his record to 3-5 on the season.
Fonseca was close behind Weststrate to finish at the No. 3 position after a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot. Fonseca continues to play some of his best tennis and extend his win streak to four straight matches and push his record to 6-5.
The dual was clinched by Berry, who also has been red hot as of late and is ranked No. 83 in the nation in singles by the ITA, beating Antreas Djakouris at the No. 1 spot in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Berry has also won his last four matches and is now a team-leading 10-2 this season.
The Mustangs will look to keep things rolling Saturday when welcoming UC Irvine, who is 2-0 so far in Big West play, to Mustang Tennis Complex for an 11 a.m. match.
