SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly men's tennis will be seeking some revenge when it begins its quest for a conference title this week at the Big West Championships. Less than two weeks ago, the Mustangs (7-11, 2-4 Big West) came up just short against the Rainbow Warriors (10-8, 3-3 Big West) at home, falling in a thriller 4-3 that came down to the No. 3 singles spot. On Friday, The Mustangs, the No. 5 seed, will face No. 4 seed Hawai'i in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships at 9 a.m. from Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego as they look to hand the Rainbow Warriors some payback. Fans can follow the action Friday via live streaming and live stats provided by the Big West. Both links can be found above and on the schedule page. In the win or go home format, the winner of Friday's match will move on to the semifinals to face No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara Saturday at 9 a.m. The Mustangs fell to the Gauchos in the regular season finale last week, 4-0. It's been a season full of ups and down for the Mustangs. Due to bad weather forcing multiple matches to be canceled, their 18 regular season matches this season mark the fewest in the Nick Carless era of Cal Poly tennis. They started out their 2023 season facing one of the best teams in the nation on the road in No. 4 Michigan. Their first victory came a few days later in a road win over BYU that started a stretch in which they two of their next three matches. Following a close 4-3 defeat to No. 73 Rice, Cal Poly proceeded to win three of its next four matches. However, they have lost three of its last four heading into this weekend. Junior Noah Berry, a two-time first team All-Big West honoree and 2021 Big West Freshman of the Year, leads the team in singles wins this year at 11-5 and is ranked 107th in the nation. Against Hawai'i on Friday, he will face 2022 Big West Player of the Year Andre Ilagan, ranked No. 74 in the nation. Ilagan has a 13-3 record this year and went 4-0 in Big West play. In doubles, Cal Poly found success during Big West play when Carless paired sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate and junior Colter Smith together. They went 3-1 during the regular season while playing mostly at the No. 2 spot. On the flip side, Hawai'i's most successful doubles tandem has been that of their No. 2 pairing in Axel Labrunie and Kilian Maitre, who are 11-2 this year. Cal Poly is seeking to win the program's fourth Big West Championships title and first since 2014. The Mustangs have reached the championship match five times since 2014 including most recently in 2021.
