SAN DIEGO — Cal Poly men's tennis suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss Friday against Hawai'i in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships in San Diego.
Things started off well for the No. 5 seed Mustangs as they took the doubles point over the No. 4 seed Rainbow Warriors. Cal Poly's No. 2 duo of juniors Fernando Fonseca and Noah Berry got a 6-3 win to kick things off. After Hawai'i won at the No. 3 spot, the Mustangs' No. 1 duo of sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate and junior Colter Smith clinched the point after winning their match via tiebreaker 7-6(7-4).
In singles, Fonseca extended the Cal Poly lead to 2-0 after winning his match at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-1. He ends the season with a 7-7 record that saw him finish it winning five of his final seven matches.
The Rainbow Warriors then won at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-3 to get on the board. Cal Poly junior Carter Crookston gave the Mustangs a 3-1 lead after he won at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-1.
Hawai'i began its comeback from there, starting at the No. 1 spot as Andre Ilagan, ranked No. 74 in the country, beat Berry in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. The Rainbow Warriors tied it at 3-3 after their No. 2 player Axel Labrunie edged junior Joe Leather in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
It came down to the No. 4 spot between Cal Poly's Colter Smith and Hawai'i's Guillaume Tattevin. Smith won the first set 6-4 but Tattevin went on to win the second 6-3 and the third 6-2 to clinch the victory for Hawai'i.
Cal Poly ends the season with a 7-12 record. They will return most of its roster from this season as they will only lose one player to graduation.
