3/30/2023 10:30:00 PM | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU, Hawaii — Graduate student Kim Bhunu (pictured above) took down a ranked opponent in singles play and freshman Alexandra Ozerets secured her 10th victory of the season, but Cal Poly women's tennis lost to Big West foe Hawai'i 5-2 Friday at the UH Tennis Complex.
In a battle between the two of the top teams in the conference standings, the Rainbow Wahine (9-6, 6-1 Big West) were able to grab an early lead by winning the doubles point.
In singles play, Ozerets was able to earn the Mustangs' first point of the dual, rallying for a comeback victory at the No. 5 spot. After dropping the first set, Ozerets won the second 6-3 and grabbed a 10-8 super tiebreaker win to improve to 10-3 on the season and 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.
Bhunu picked up Cal Poly's second victory in the dual, downing Ana Vilcek, the 107th-ranked singles player in the country, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a thrilling match at the No. 1 spot. It was Bhunu's second win of the season over a ranked opponent. The triumph also allowed Bhunu to improve to 6-1 over her last eight singles matches.
Sophomore Peyton Dunkle showed plenty of fight in her match at No. 4. After losing the first set, she rallied for a 6-4 second-set victory to force a super tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Dunkle came up short in a tightly-contested 10-point tiebreaker.
Melissa LaMette and Ozerets, who are 6-2 this season, were leading 5-4 in their doubles match at the No. 3 spot when Hawai'i clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Cal Poly (7-7, 3-2 Big West) heads to Santa Clara on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
